How to identify a turbo
1.- Garret

The identification plate varies according to whether it is related to an original turbo installed by the vehicle manufacturer or to a turbo purchased from the independent aftermarket. The turbo identification plate is usually on the turbo body or on the intake plate and is fastened with 2 rivets. This identification plate shows:

  • A custom or Garrett reference number (p / no part number)
  • The turbo model and serial number

The reference number of a Garret Turbocharger consists of 6 digits, followed by a dash and other additional digits. These usually start with 4 or 7, although the latest models can start with 8.

In some cases, only the OEM reference (that of the engine manufacturer) appears on the plate, this usually occurs with engine manufacturers such as CATERPILLAR, DETROIT DIESEL, JOHN DEERE, PERKINS and KHDEUTZ, so we can use the engine's search engine. WEB, introducing the OEM reference and selecting the search "by OEM reference" (you must follow the same style with spaces, dashes, etc ...).

2.- IHI

The reference of the IHI models is alphanumeric and is engraved on the surface of the compression shell. The turbo reference (SPEC) begins with two letters followed by two numbers. While the model starts with RH.

IHI Reference Number: Two letters followed by one or two numbers (AAXX). Eg VN3

Turbo model: RH followed by an alphanumeric code (RHXXX). Ex. RHF4

3.- Mitsubishi Power Systems

The reference number of a Mitsubishi turbo consists of a 5-digit prefix, followed by a hyphen and 5 more digits. For example, 49189-01000

The reference is engraved on the compressor housing. In some cases, the Mitsubishi reference number is reduced. In these cases, you should look at the last two digits of the prefix and then add the additional 5 digits, for example, 73-06100 will be 49173-06100.

The most popular Mitsubishi prefixes are the following:

  • 49131-
  • 49135-
  • 49173-
  • 49177-
  • 49178-
  • 49183-
  • 49189-
  • 49377-
  • 49378-

4.- Borgwarner - KKK (3K)

The identification plate of the turbo, in the old series 3LD, 4LF, ... we can find it in the body of the turbo or in the intake conch shell fastened with 2 rivets. However, in the K series the plate is usually on the plate or in the intake shell, and in the new series KP and BV the plate only appears on the intake shell.

Once located the identification plate, we can find several numbers.

The most important is the 3K reference, which has a series of 11 numbers with the following pattern:

XXXX-XXX-XXXX

In some turbos of the series K0 and KP the references appear abbreviated, as, for example:

  • K03-011 = 5303-988-0011
  • K031-014 = 5303-988-0014
  • K04-001 = 5304-988-0001
  • KP31-002 = 5431-988-0002
  • KP35-000 = 5435-988-0000
  • KP39-007 = 5439-988-0007

It may happen that on the plate only the OEM reference (that of the motor manufacturer) appears, this is a usual case in CATERPILLAR, DETROIT DIESEL, JOHN DEERE, PERKINS and KHDEUTZ, so we can use the search engine of this WEB, introducing the OEM reference and selecting the search "by OEM reference" (must follow the same style with spaces, dashes, etc ...).

5.- Borgwarner - SCHWITZER

The turbo identification plate is usually attached to the turbo body with one or two rivets.

There are variants in relation to how the information on the plate is shown:

  • The Schwitzer reference appears on the plate, which facilitates the identification of the turbo.
  • Only the OEM reference (the motor manufacturer's reference) appears on the plate. This is usually the case when the engine manufacturer is CATERPILLAR, DETROIT DIESEL, JOHN DEERE, PERKINS and KHDEUTZ. In these cases we will introduce the OEM number in the search engine of references of this web (it must respect spaces, scripts, etc ...).

In the event that the search does not give you any results, please contact us by e-mail and we will try to help you as soon as possible.

6.- Toyota

In the old TOYOTA turbos, the turbo reference appears on a sticker that is affixed to the turbo valve, however, in modern ones it is stuck or engraved on the intake conch.

In the event that the reference appears on the valve, 5 numbers will appear as 54090, to complete the reference just add the front 17201, so the complete reference is 17201-54090 (in some cases the reference appears complete).

In the case of new turbos, the reference appears complete in the admission shell next to the serial number.

In the event that the sticker does not appear or has been lost, we must try to identify it by looking for the reference engraved on the edge of the escape shell, this is a 5-digit number like 54030. But this reference is the turbo, if not the from the escape conch. Using the reference of the shell and the application of the turbo can identify the turbo in question.
